Each Monday, the Centre Daily Times will publish an installment in our “Share our Heritage” series, featuring photos from Centre County’s past. Today’s photo is from Ed Mattil, of State College. He was a member of the State College High School Class of 1936.
Mattil wrote: “This is the very first State College junior high football team. This was taken in 1931 in the Old Hollow, the sinkhole that is now the excellent football stadium.
“Please note: There are 12 uniforms — 11 for the team and one for a substitute. Pants were provided for all of the subs. All players had to provide their own shoes.
“I think the junior high school football program did not continue for many years.”
