Each Monday, the Centre Daily Times will publish an installment in our “Share our Heritage” series, featuring photos from Centre County’s past. Today’s photo is from Karl Striedieck.
Striedieck wrote: “Readers might be interested in a facet of local aviation that occurred around here from 1939 to 1949. Known as the All American Airways airmail pickup, it provided airmail service for many communities in Pennsylvania.
“The Stinson SR-10 aircraft did not land, but would drop a canister containing the incoming mail and snatched up another with the outgoing mail. The pickup site was next to the intersection of North Atherton Street and North Hills Place. The original pickup spot is now the site of a house at 140 North Hills Place.
“My mother was the local agent for the twice-a-day service. Incidentally, All American Airways grew to become USAir. The photos were taken with a primitive Brownie box camera.”
Never miss a local story.
