Each Monday, the Centre Daily Times will publish an installment in our “Share our Heritage” series, featuring photos from Centre County’s past. Today’s photo is from Gina Mele.
She wrote: “This is a picture of Grace Lutheran Church, where it used to stand on the corner of College (Avenue) and Atherton (Street). The picture belongs to Dean Spayd, 92, of rural Centre Hall. He and his late wife, Arlene, were married there on April 22, 1945.”
Mele also quoted information from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission website: “The congregation of Grace Lutheran Church began in 1905, and the first church was finished in 1908. Tremendous fundraising efforts were required to build the first church, in addition to generous donations from parishioners. Over the next five decades, the congregation grew to such a size that, by 1957 it was agreed that a new church had to be built.”
Readers can contribute to the “Share our Heritage” series by sharing their own photos.
