A new restaurant will bring a new twist on familiar flavors to Nittany Mall.
Soup ‘R Dogs, which could open as soon as Sept. 1 across from Golden Ladle, will be a family owned eatery with a simple menu.
“It’s going to be a gourmet hot dog and chili shop,” co-owner James Flug said. “We’ll have the hot dogs on rollers and about 20 possible toppings. It’s like a Subway almost. You get the dog, the bun and there are signature dogs we can make, or you can also make your own bacon and cheese or whatever combo you like. We have famous chili in the family, Meyer Dairy ice cream, cold-brewed coffee and freshly made lemonade. It just brings a whole new dimension to the mall here.”
Flug’s step-daughter Stephanie Kozel will run the operation with him.
They wanted the menu to feature American favorites.
“What we wanted to do was offer the whole State College area a different variety of foods with fresh ingredients,” he said. “It’s the root of American society, back to the roots, the basics, almost like Penn State football’s ‘No names, all game’ motto. These are the basics that people love, and we want to give them an experience that brings the local community together at the mall and makes it a community center.”
The pair are excited to get started in the space that was once occupied by Pretzels Plus.
They plan to employ eight to 10 people.
“The opportunity opened up here, and it’s something different,” Flug said. “We’re emphatically excited. It’s local and supporting local companies. Bringing in Meyer is huge ... we’ve got some pregame jitters, but we’re ready.”
