Tractor-trailer crash closes Route 322

A tractor-trailer crash near the top of Seven Mountains on U.S. Route 322 closed the road in both directions for two and a half hours beginning about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The driver, Vernon C. Vrooman, of Sioux Falls, S.D., was traveling west on Route 322, carrying a load of dry Kraft food products from Dover, Del., to Bismark, N.C.

He nearing the top of Seven Mountains, when he missed a gear in the tractor-trailer while climbing the grade, reported Mifflin County Regional Police Department.

The tractor trailer, owned by MCT Transportation LLC, of Peru, Ill., drifted backward about 160 feet, then jacknifed through the center concrete barrier and crushed about 20 feet of the barrier, police reported. The truck came to a stop on top of the barrier.

Vrooman was not injured. The crash required both lanes to be shut down while the crash site was cleaned up.
