MIDDAY REPORT: Ready for a spread offense?; 21st birthday celebration ends in penalty; fly-fishing takes spotlight

THE SPREAD offense is coming, Penn State fans.

What kind is the big question.

Coach Joe Paterno looked ahead at Big Ten Media Day and had this to say about the spread.

“You’re always trying to make sure you can get the most out of what you got,” Paterno said. “And until we get in there, and have a couple of scrimmages, and knock some people around, put some kids under some pressure, try a couple things, then we’ll have a better idea of what we’re gonna do.”

Read Jeff Rice's coverage from Chicago and start talking football. It's only a few weeks away.

The media's pick? The Ohio State Buckeyes, no surprise.

Paterno and Purdue's Joe Tiller got plenty of attention, one for staying and one for going. Tiller's plan: Go fishin'.

The Big Ten reports top the midday report on a sunny Happy Valley Friday. Thanks for joining us.

PATERNO is not going to be happy when he sees damage to the Lasch Building, you can be sure.

“It’s unfortunate. It’s so unnecessary,” he said yesterday.

A student's drunken romp on his 21st birthday is blamed, and police have charged an Emmaus man.

Pete Bosak broke the story yesterday online. Read his report today.
