No one has to tell Sean Burke, Dustin Smith and Sandy Bainey about the past.
They know a new restaurant has opened and closed about once a year at 101 S. Allegheny St. in Bellefonte since 2014, but they also have an unwavering belief that their concept and service will break the spell.
“We don’t stop to think about that,” Smith said. “We’re doing something different from what they did. Our people are different from their people. Our drive is different, and our experiences are different, and I think we have everything it takes to do well here.”
State Burger Co. will open Monday and offer a simple but flexible menu.

The main options will include different types of handmade burgers and fries that can be matched with breads, cheeses, toppings and sauces or be made into a salad. Other options will include veggie burgers, seafood and gluten-free foods. The setup will allow customers to “100 percent design their experience.”
“There are plenty of other types of restaurants and specialties in Bellefonte, but there is no burger place like this,” Burke said. “And the way we do the burgers is different even from any place in State College.”
Burke and Smith, the owners, also feel they have hired the right people for a 12-person staff, which is led by Bainey, the restaurant’s manager.
“It’s very nice to have a specific day to open,” Bainey said. “We’ve been saying we’ll be open soon for a few weeks, and now that that’s finalized we feel all the nerves and excitement. We can’t wait to have our opening day.”
