Chances are that you already know where you’ll be this Fourth of July.
The barbecues are planned, and the pools are ready.
But there are a few things happening during Central PA 4th Fest you may not know about.
Firecracker 4K/4 Mile Race
Never miss a local story.
The race is set for 9 a.m. Monday, an early morning start for walkers and runners with a hop in their step for the Fourth of July. Participants can register online or wait until 7:30 a.m. the day of the race.
A digital timing system will be used to determine winners in each age group with prizes awarded to the top three finishers in each category.
Pre-race packet pickup for shirts, timing chip and more is from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Centre County/Penn State Visitor Center, located at Park Avenue and Porter Road on campus.
Parade of Heroes
The 5th annual Parade of Heroes begins at 2 p.m. Monday in front of the State College Municipal Building. It runs through downtown, across the Penn State campus and ends at the Bryce Jordan Center.
“The Parade of Heroes celebrates our community and its people — emergency services, community groups, the arts and many more,” according to the 4th Fest website. “It is also the platform utilized to publicly thank and recognize the heroes of central Pennsylvania.”
Those selected to be in the parade will receive a plaque and be transported with their names and towns highlighted on banners alongside the vehicle they are in.
Ready to be awestruck?
The 4th Fest fireworks show aims to amaze.
“I remember watching the aerial displays from my apartment in Boalsburg in 1999 right after I had returned to the area,” 4th Fest Executive Director Karl Libhart recently told the CDT.
The show is synced with music — a tradition since 1994 — played on 93.7 The Bus, which will play tunes from TV and the big screen, plus songs played by a variety of bands. About four shells will be launched per second, but the grand finale will ramp up the action with 27 shells per second.
About 10,830 shells will be launched during the show for about 80,000 spectators.
There are dozens of other activities, ranging from a hardcore mud run mini obstacle course and a giant flag birthday cake to a BMX acrobatics stunt show and musical performers
A complete list of activities is on the 4th Fest website at www.4thfest.org/events/celebrations/activities-concessions/.
