Local law enforcement officers and community members gathered Thursday evening in front of the county courthouse in Bellefonte to honor police officers who died in the line of duty in 2007.
The ceremony takes place each year on May 15 to remember fallen officers and thank those who risk their lives daily to protect our communities.
“Tonight is the night that reminds us that we must never take our life and liberty for granted,” said keynote speaker Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira.
Similar ceremonies take place around the country on May 15 to honor those who gave all, Madeira said, “with all the pomp and circumstance so that we never forget.”
State police Trooper Derek Pacella read the names of 181 officers who died in the line of duty across the United States in 2007.
A 21-gun salute followed a police vehicle procession led by Bellefonte Police Chief Shawn Weaver, and Sheriff Denny Nau led the ceremony.
