Last mined in the 1950s, a property in Snow Shoe Township is set to be reclaimed, state Rep. Mike Hanna, D-Lock Haven, said.
The state Department of Environmental Protection recently awarded the contract for reclamation to JBS Dirt Inc., of Canastota, N.Y., for $321,718. The project is expected to be complete by March.
“Centre County will benefit in many ways through this cleanup,” Hanna said in a news release. “Almost three-quarters of a mile of dangerous high wall will be eliminated, as well as open pits that pose hazards to hunters who frequent the area.”
There is a home and a business within 300 feet of the abandoned property, Hanna said.
The reclamation will improve water quality of the nearby wetlands, eliminate the sheer mining walls and pits and will involve seeding, fertilizing and erosion and sediment controls. Mature trees on the property will be preserved, Hanna said.
The project will be funded from fees paid by the coal industry to reclaim mine sites that were abandoned before passage of the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977.
