Multiple fire departments responded to a house fire on Valentine Street Thursday morning, closing a section of Willowbank Street as crews worked to extinguish the blaze.
The call came in at about 9:30 a.m. Bellefonte Fire Chief Tim Schreffler said the fire started in the basement before moving to the first and second floors, causing “considerable” fire and smoke damage throughout the house.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.
Logan, Undine, Alpha, Milesburg and Pleasant Gap fire companies responded to the call, he said.
“When you have a fire like this at this time of day, we want to get as many as we can muster,” he said, “so you can continually switch out interior crews.”
Valentine Street resident Laurie Stanley said she saw smoke in the back of the house at the onset, saying it was “shocking” how fast the fire spread through the house.
“It’s sad though, you know,” she said. “This is our little neighborhood.”
