Elementary schools in Penns Valley are set to double as art museums this week.
Budding artists will have paintings, sculptures and poetry on display for the district’s annual art show open houses.
“Come to your local elementary school to view many wonderful art creations and listen to our young artists tell how they developed their pieces,” school officials said on the district website.
All students have been invited to enter one original work of art in this year’s show, officials said.
Never miss a local story.
The open houses are set for Monday at Miles Township Elementary, Tuesday at Penns Valley Elementary/Intermediate and Wednesday at Centre Hall Elementary. All art shows will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.
Youngsters give back
Penns Valley district officials are praising sixth-grade students for raising money to help other youngsters suffering from pediatric cancer.
The sixth-graders at Penns Valley Intermediate School raised more than $1,000 for this year’s record-setting Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.
Penn State students raised $12.37 million for pediatric cancer research this year.
The record total was announced Feb. 17 at the culmination of the annual 46-hour dance marathon to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund.
Penns Valley students and families chipped in by raising $1,002 for Four Diamonds children. “You are making such a difference in the lives of so many children,” district officials said.
Power of the spoken word
The Green Drake Gallery and Arts Center and two local residents have started a poetry and prose reading program in Millheim.
The program, headed by Carl and Margie Gaffron, kicked off this past weekend and will continue on the fourth Friday of every month, according to the gallery.
Events scheduled in the coming months will feature open readings, and those interested are encouraged to attend. The readings start at 8 p.m and are free to attend, but donations to the gallery are encouraged.
