It’s a little early to know if Penn State will get a shot at the the trophy of college football, the College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy.
The Nittany Lions may or may not get to cluster around for a group picture with it.
But you and your friends? Hey, that could be doable.
On Friday, the trophy will be on display and waiting to be worshiped by the football faithful making a pilgrimage to Walmart.
Store management confirmed that the stylized golden football trophy will available for pictures from 1-3 p.m. at the Benner Pike store, and from 4-6 p.m. at the North Atherton Street store.
“It just kind of happened quickly,” a Walmart manager said.
Dr. Pepper sponsors the trophy and the championship, and the trophy will be placed in the grocery store section of the stores with a Dr. Pepper display.
The manager said the visit is part of a promotion that has the trophy following ESPN’s College GameDay, which will be broadcasting from the Old Main lawn Saturday as a lead-up to the prime-time conference game between No. 2 Penn State and No. 19 Michigan.
Penn State just missed a chance to fight for the championship last season when Ohio State was given a berth in the playoffs over the Nittany Lions, who knocked the second-ranked team out of the top with an unexpected October win. Ohio State went on to be shut out by Clemson and missed their pose with the trophy, too.
