Affordable housing could be coming to South Atherton Street thanks to the Metropolitan project.
Developer Ara Kervandjian brought plans for a 12-apartment building before the borough Planning Commission on Wednesday. According to the proposal, the four-story structure would be located at 1311 S. Atherton St. and would consist of a ground floor of commercial space beneath three stories of two-bedroom apartments.
The building was designed as part of a zoning ordinance requirement in which 10 percent of a housing project must be designated for affordable housing. Planner Ed LeClear said Kervandjian had the option of creating the housing off-site if it wasn’t included in his Metropolitan project.
According to senior planner Anne Messner, two-bedroom apartments would best meet the needs of the affordable housing community based on housing staff suggestions.
“Based on household makeup, it’s common to have one-parent households in that environment,” Messner said. “Two bedrooms is meeting that type of demographic. You rarely see large families.”
