Missing man found unharmed
An 83-year-old man who wandered away from his family at a College Township supermarket this afternoon has been found unharmed.
State College police said K. Vedam was discovered about 10:30 p.m. today after having left his family while shopping at the Weis Markets on Rolling Ridge Drive in College Township.
The Central Region Emergency Strike Team and the Working K-9 Association of Central Pennsylvania assisted police in the search. Centre County 911 also implemented an automated calling system, known as Code Red, by which police received information that helped them find Vedam.
Two bars cited for liquor violations
Two Centre County establishments were cited by the Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement. Club Number 779, at 2928 Penns Valley Pike in Centre Hall was cited for failing to keep good records, and The Lion’s Den, at 116-118 S. Garner Street in State College was cited for serving a visibly intoxicated man April 16.
These charges will be brought before an administrative law judge who could could impose penalties ranging from $50 to $5,000, and can impose a license suspension or revocation or mandate training.
Work on Route 26 delayed until next week
Milling work scheduled to begin Wednesday on state Route 26 near Pleasant Gap has been rescheduled for next week, the state Department of Transportation announced.
The week of June 1 will see crews doing milling on Route 26 between the intersection of state routes 144 and 26 in Pleasant Gap and the intersection of Route 26 and U.S. Route 220.
As that work takes place, according to PennDOT, crews also will be paving the Route 64 section of the project, from the intersection of routes 64 and 220 to the village of Zion.
The week of June 8, the section of Route 26 that was milled the previous week will be paved.
In all three instances, flaggers and alternating lane restrictions will be in place, and motorists should expect delays.
The $2.8 million project is financed with federal stimulus funds. Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College is the contractor.
Gas leak behind store front prompts evacuation
A gas leak behind a store front on North Atherton Street, across from the entrance to the Colonnade shopping center, prompted the evacuation of the Verizon Wireless, Starbucks and KFC for a short time Wednesday afternoon.
Rusty Schreiner, Alpha Fire Company fire administrator, said the stores were vacated as a precaution and no gas was found to have leaked indoors. Columbia Gas officials were on the scene and were able to terminate the leak quickly, he said.
Laptop worth $1,500 reported stolen
A laptop valued at $1,500 was reported stolen from an apartment at 623 W. College Ave. State College police say the theft, reported on Tuesday, probably occurred the night before.
