Bald Eagle Area just might be the school beat when it comes to competitions.
In its first year, the Bald Eagle Area jazz band won the Tournament Indoor Association Atlantic Coast Championship in Wildwood, N.J.
District spokeswoman Rose Hoover said the band placed first of eight jazz bands in their category.
The BEA trombone and trumpet sections also won best section awards.
Never miss a local story.
Senior Matt Blaylock was awarded a $1,000 scholarship, and Jake Bloom and Karina Bloom were selected for the All-Star Jazz Band.
In a competition not so new to the school, BEA placed first in the annual Centre County Envirothon for the 17th consecutive year.
The BEA team also competed at the Pennsylvania State Envirothon at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, and Camp Mount Luther in Mifflinburg last week.
During the two-day Envirothon competition, teams participate in a series of tests that focus on soil and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife and current environmental issues.
Teams were also asked to help solve a specific environmental challenge and give a proposal to a panel of judges who evaluated each team on its problem-solving capabilities and presentation skills, a report from the state Department of Education said.
Students competed for a share of more than $10,000 in scholarships, and the chance to represent Pennsylvania at the National Conservation Foundation-Envirothon.
“The Envirothon teaches students to be critical, strategic thinkers in a world that’s dependent on science, technology, engineering and math — the STEM studies,” Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said. “Jobs in these STEM fields are expected to grow in demand by more than 10 percent in the next 10 years.”
Additionally, last month at the Math 24 Challenge at Lock Haven University’s Clearfield campus, a Wingate Elementary School student was a top three finalist in the fourth and fifth grade levels.
Hoover said Coen Bainey will compete on June 15 at the state math competition in Harrisburg.
The competition was sponsored by Central Intermediate Unit 10, which oversees public schools in its region including those in Centre County.
