The average temperature in January was a mere 19.8 degrees and this was the coldest January in 20 years, according to Penn State’s Campus Weather Service.
January 2014 wasn’t quite as cold as that month in 1994, which had an average temperature of 18.6 degrees, said Jon Nese, a meteorologist with the weather service.
This past January will go in the history books as the ninth-coldest January on record in State College since 1894, Nese said.
The area saw temperatures below zero on several occasions, most recently minus 2 at Penn State’s Walker Building on Tuesday.
January was 7.4 degrees below the month’s average temperature of 27.2 degrees from 1981 to 2010.
The past two Januarys were much warmer, Nese said. It was on average 29.4 degrees in January 2013 and 30.5 degrees in January 2012.
