Sign decrying PV taxes comes down -- then goes back up

A sign posted about three years ago by a farmer on state Route 45 proclaiming that Penns Valley School District has the highest taxes in Centre County came down today — then went back up.

In an article Thursday in the Centre Daily Times, school district officials had expressed the wish that the sign come down, saying it is no longer accurate and that they worry it is hindering recruitment of employees and discouraging people and businesses from locating in the county.

Penns Valley residents pay the third-highest average annual taxes in Centre County, behind State College and Bellefonte school district residents.

Property owner Sally Tanis said the sign was taken down Thursday, revised to say Penns Valley has the third-highest taxes in Centre County, then put back into place along Route 45, a main artery through Penns Valley.

It was originally erected in 2005, following a 20 percent increase in the Penns Valley School District property tax rate.

Sally Tanis, in a voice mail message, said a new sign will soon go up "reflecting the high property taxes and all the empty classrooms we are paying for in the Penns Valley area."
