Philipsburg-Osceola junior high students designed cars from a block of balsa wood and launched them, using a carbon dioxide cartridge, down a 65-foot long track. After racing is finished, students will take the statistics and calculate their cars' horsepower and speed. The cars can reach speeds of 35 to 45 mph.

Technology teacher Cory Wood, right, helps Nicholas Gray, center, attach a balsa wood race car to a wire as Zach Jones works to prepare his car for a race at Philipsburg Middle School on Thursday, October 29, 2009. The students formed the cars from a block of balsa wood and launched them using a CO2 cartridge down track that was 65 feet long. The students then take their time and figure out how fast the car was travelling. Wood said the cars typically reach speeds of 35-45 miles per hour. CDT/Christopher Weddle
