closePatricia Best, who retired this year as superintendent of State College Area School District, was feted Wednesday as Penn State’s 2009 Renaissance Fund honoree.
The Renaissance Fund each year honors a person who has contributed to Penn State and the community through a lifetime of service. The annual Renaissance Fund dinner, held at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, raises money in the honoree’s name that is used to endow scholarships, awarded to academically talented Penn State students in financial need. The fund has raised $8 million since its inception in 1969.
Best moved to State College in 1977, going to work for the school district as a guidance counselor, then appointed to an administrative position. In 1995, she was promoted to assistant superintendent, and four years later became superintendent.
Best has been involved in many community and educational organizations, including Leadership Centre County and the Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County, where she served as board chairwoman from 2006 to 2008. In 2006, she was elected state president of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators.
