- sganim@centredaily.comPENNS VALLEY — A 63-year-old Spring Mills man was flown to a local hospital Tuesday after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car on state Route 45.
State police trooper Jeffrey Ebeck said that 23-year-old Elliot Slack was driving a Mazda Protege west on Route 45 when he attempted to pass another car.
The driver’s side of Slack’s Protege struck the eastbound Yamaha motorcycle.
“(Slack) didn’t realize the motorcycle was there, and hit him,” Ebeck said.
The cyclist, Robert Orndorf, slid several feet before his motorcycle came to rest up against a utility pole.
An Amish man who came to the cyclist’s aid said Orndorf was talking but appeared to have a bad foot injury.
Ebeck said it looked like the crash happened just into the passing zone. It wasn’t known if any citations would be issued.
Slack, also of Spring Mills, was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center to be examined.
The Mazda and the motorcycle both had moderate damage.
Gregg Township Fire Company was at the scene to assist with traffic control.
One lane of Route 45 remained open for most of the time to let traffic pass through. It was closed for a short time to allow the helicopter to land and take off.
The crash happened around 1:20 p.m., near the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Church at 3503 Penns Valley Road.
The investigation is continuing, state police said.
