19-year-old killed in Harrisburg shooting
HARRISBURG — Police are looking for the assailants who shot and killed a 19-year-old man walking near an Interstate 83 interchange in broad daylight.
Harrisburg Police Chief Charles Kellar says someone in a car fired at least five shots at the man Wednesday afternoon. He says the victim was targeted because of an earlier altercation. The victim’s name was not immediately released and no arrests were immediately made.
The fatality is the seventh shooting incident in as many days in Harrisburg.
On Tuesday, police say assailants in a car sprayed about 20 shots at a group of people near a park and playground where children were playing. No one was hit and police arrested three juveniles and an adult.
One-man school board ponders future
ASHLAND — The lone remaining member of a Pennsylvania school board says he’s been trying to figure out what authority he has now that a judge ordered all the others off.
Schuylkill County Judge D. Michael Stine didn’t explain his reasoning for Tuesday’s order removing all members of the North Schuylkill school board except for 23-year-old Robert Orth. He said he will provide an explanation later.
Orth said Wednesday he doesn’t know if he can take any action as a one-man school board. He doesn’t have much time to find out: The next school board meeting is tonight. Orth says he’s been asking state officials for guidance. He says most people have told him they haven’t heard of any similar situation and they don’t know what to do either.
Williamsport police arrest man in mix-up
WILLIAMSPORT — Police have arrested a man after a standoff that lasted about an hour and a half — but it turned out he wasn’t the man they were looking for.
Police say a man thought to be a suspect in a high-profile case fled from police Wednesday, ran into a home in Williamsport and wouldn’t come out. When he eventually emerged, police learned he was really 21-year-old Alphonso Batten, who was accused of driving on a suspended license and leading police on a high-speed chase earlier this month. Police wouldn’t say what high-profile case they thought Batten was a suspect in. Batten was jailed Wednesday evening.
Man accused of using porn to shoo away kids
PHOENIXVILLE — Police in suburban Philadelphia say a man weary of children playing in his cul-de-sac blared a pornographic soundtrack to chase them off.
Michael Buck, 27, faces a felony obscenity charge and two misdemeanors for the alleged May 31 stunt at his upscale Phoenixville home. Irate neighbors told police they could hear the sexually explicit audio a block and a half away.
Buck has a preliminary hearing scheduled for next month. His lawyer declined to comment Wednesday.
