closeIt's official: Record set for earliest snowfall; rain, snow to continue all weekend
It’s official. According to the National Weather Service in State College, the earliest local snowfall in recorded history has a new mark -- Oct. 15, 2009.
“We talked to the official weather station on the Penn State campus ... and they reported three-tenths of an inch already,” said Aaron Tyburski, a meteorologist with the weather service. “To get this kind of snow, during daytime hours, this early in the year is historic -- I don’t know any other word for it.”
The Penns Valley Homecoming Parade, scheduled to take place this evening at the Grange fairgrounds, has been postponed until Oct. 21 -- when the forecast calls for more mild temperatures. Bellefonte also canceled its parade.
Paternoville, the temporary village created by Penn State students camping outside of Beaver Stadium prior to each home game, was also being dismantled.
Students there said that was in keeping with Penn State's policy not to allow students to camp at Paternoville if the temperatures dropped below freezing. Students said they had until 6 p.m. to tear down the tents.
A National Weather Service meteorologist said precipitation, in the form of rain or snow, could continue through much of the weekend. AccuWeather said they expected Thursday's snowfall would be the largest accumulation, with Friday and Saturday bringing periods of snow and rain, and temperatures rising by early next week.
