closePHILIPSBURG — It takes more than a little rain to scare people away from Harvest Fest.
Especially people with demon jack-in-the-boxes and bloody axes.
A misty drizzle repeatedly turned to a light pour, but that didn’t keep the costumed hordes from showing up en masse for the parade at noon, or the grandparents and other onlookers from lining Front Street to watch the wicked witches, cuddly animals and gory killers marching past.
“I love to see all the kids,” said Sandy Turner, of Philipsburg. She got plenty of pictures of three of her grandchildren, but she also oohed and ahhed over other creative costumes. Eddie Voyzey, 10, in his version of Johnny Apple-seed, complete with saucepot hat, bird and beard, drew plenty of praise.
Outdoor activities, such as the vendors in the Moshannon Building parking lot, were curtailed by weather, but indoor events such as the haunted house and the Friends of the Philipsburg Library book sale still brought out supporters.
The festival even got some local officials into the spirit. Both Philipsburg Borough Council President Mike Wilks and Councilwoman Josie Gildow showed up in costume to participate in the Philipsburg Revitalization Corp.- sponsored activities.
