Changes being made in the operation of the Bennett Family Center are disheartening.
The child care employees and the children and families of the center appear to have not been consulted before the announcement of the changes was made.
I ask Penn State President Rodney Erickson, Health and Human Development Dean Ann Crouter other Penn State decision-makers and the community to read and consider the philosophy on the Human Development and Family Studies Children’s Programs website (childcare.psu.edu/bfc/philosophy.html), which states:
“The Bennett Family Center program is based on the belief that we are an extension of the family. We are strongly committed to working with children and families. As early childhood educators, we believe it is critical for us to understand the needs and values of parents so that we can best serve their children. Our goal is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment by building a sense of community among parents, children, and staff members.”
It seems to me that the staff and the children and families have developed a strong bond of trust and they appear to be fulfilling the stated philosophy.
Do Human Development and Family Studies and other Penn State administrators have a role in fulfilling this philosophy?
Are they doing it?
Judge for yourself.
