In a recent pre-election forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Ron Madrid, candidate for mayor of State College, said he should be elected because he has the demonstrated capability to manage multimillion-dollar programs.
This may be true, but Madrid should know that, as mayor, he would have no role in managing the budget or any of the programs or policies of the borough.
It is disingenuous to imply otherwise.
Council makes budgetary and policy decisions and staff carry them out. The mayor’s job is to interact with many groups and organizations in the borough, in the region and in the state.
The job consists mainly of outreach.
Elizabeth Goreham has done an excellent job in that capacity. Let’s give her the opportunity to continue.
