Isn’t it nice to hear someone thank you for your military service? As a veteran, I think most of us deeply appreciate this compliment.
But I wonder how our government feels about us.
President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel are going to further reduce our military, following $480 billion in cuts Obama has already made. The Navy will be smaller than before World War I, the Army will be smaller than it was in 1940 and the Air Force smaller than it has been since World War II.
The Marine Corps will suffer losses of at least 7 percent. Between 2008 and 2012, the Air Force retired 700 more aircraft than it purchased and acquired fewer than it did in 1915.
A mainstay of our airstrike force is a bomber designed in the 1940s and built in the 1950s. Our army will be the size of Vietnam’s or Turkey’s.
Before these cutbacks, when our ambassador was attacked in Benghazi, we could not round up enough troops to make a rescue attempt, choosing to try to blame the whole situation on an anti-Islam video rather than on the terrorists who committed this crime. The truth is finally coming out. Shame it didn’t before the elections. Might have made an impact.
And how did SEAL Team 6 feel when they were outed by Obama and Vice President Joe Biden after the death of Osama bin Laden? They didn’t want or need the publicity, but the administration sure did.
