Letter to the editor | Not supporting school referendum ‘myopic’

In the aftermath of the school referendum approval, there are complaints already about the tax impact on some people. Under our Constitution, we live with a social contract where we collectively seek to improve the lives of all citizens. That’s why tax dollars are used to pay for schools, and roads and municipal improvements. To complain that you don’t have kids so you shouldn’t pay increased taxes or to say you don’t read books so the government shouldn’t support libraries is breathtakingly selfish and myopic. No one likes taxes but as Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Taxes are the price we pay for civilization.”
