As the horror in the Middle East continues, I take less and less stock in descriptions that conclude that one side is more to blame than the other. Each side succeeds in bringing out the worst in the other, ever lowering the bar, giving themselves further excuses to point out the excesses of the other rather than reflecting on their own, using their own children as shields and pawns.
I don’t know who to feel sorrier for, the children who are killed or those who survive and are raised in an environment of hate and violence. I join in the prayers of those who are there describing the situation, who know much more about it than I do, who yearn for the moderates to prevail over the extremists. Neither side will succeed in defeating the other. Accepting this reality is the first step, like an addict who hits rock bottom. The children of this region deserve better.
