Many of the Chinese students here are but a generation from being landed peasants entering the money economy, which is both a tremendous gain for calculative rationality and, at the same time, a fall into abstraction.
Each one of us is but three or four generations from the land as well.
The task now is to return to the land. But in a new way, preserving reason while keeping the land’s great specificness under the sheltering sky. The land is now the whole Earth into which we are each called by name as citizens. For the land is both our great home and our urgent moral concern.
Never miss a local story.
