State College action applauded
I applaud State College Borough Council, especially Councilman Evan Myers and Mayor Elizabeth Goreham, for passing a resolution that stands up to the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision (“ State College Borough Council urges reversal of Citizens United decision,” Sept. 8, CDT). Sen. John McCain has called it the court’s worst decision ever, as it opened the floodgates of corporate money into federal elections. The decision gave the corporations on Wall Street a megaphone of money that drowns out the voices of the people on the Main Streets of America.
Congress can change this by passing a constitutional amendment that would take campaign speech out of the clutches of the corporations and put it back in the hands of the people. As a resident of and candidate for the Fifth Congressional District, I support the passage of this amendment. I urge Sens. Bob Casey and Pat Toomey, as well as Rep. Glenn Thompson, to support this amendment when it comes up for a vote.
Of course, voters have the ultimate megaphone — the ballot box. I ask them to use this power in November to support candidates that back reforms that give our elections back to the people.
