Following President Eric Barron’s inappropriate gestures on campus today, I would like to share an opinion post (as a Penn State student) that I shared on several social media sites:
Absolutely disgusted that I attend a university where the president believes this is an appropriate gesture in light of recent events. Race is a real issue in today’s society, and I wholly agree that it needs to be addressed and even protested; however, by showing this hand gesture, as a student I can only conclude that President Barron is supporting the idea that our justice system/police officers personally victimize the entire black race ... and that is simply not the case as exemplified by the recent grand jury decision.
President Barron — where is your support for the officer, who was only doing his job, and now must resign from that job without severance in addition to receiving multiple death threats a day from protesters? I understand that you may have your own personal opinion, but you now represent an entire university and alumni network of hundreds of thousands of people, not just the few hundred who you were standing with today. I wish you would consider the consequences that your “photo-op” had today and issue a formal apology.
