I am a resident of Patton Township and while watching their budget deliberations I was aghast to hear the township supervisors approve a donation of money to a local nonprofit. The only question appeared to be whether they should give the donation to Centre Foundation or United Way (provided it were not used for overhead).
These are worthy organizations and many of us may support them regularly or from time to time. That is not the issue. The issue is: What is the rationale to tax residents to attend to the affairs of Patton Township government and then give a donation from collected taxes to any organization? That is not in the best interest of the township or taxpayers. And it sets a horrendous precedent. Especially since the donations are awarded in a capricious non-vetted process. What are they thinking?
