Last week’s student protests and President Eric Barron’s gesture of solidarity sparked vitriolic responses from white students and alumni, as evidenced by the letters to the editor in the Centre Daily Times and comments on social media.
These comments not only reflect the pervasiveness of racism in the United States and at Penn State, but also create a hostile environment for students, staff and faculty of color at Penn State and in the community.
To believe that blacks are treated fairly in our criminal justice system is willful ignorance — of the injustices that blacks and other people of color face and of our own privilege as people who happened to be born with light skin.
I applaud the student protesters and Barron for raising our awareness of police brutality and racism.
Never miss a local story.
