It was good to see the cartoon supporting the minimum wage increase Tuesday.
Apart from the social justice reasons, which are advanced (and they are worthy ones), there is an extra one: To ease the awful budget deficit that Gov. Tom Corbett has dumped on us.
The fact is that people at minimum wage — and those somewhat above it — depend on food stamps to keep body and soul together: food stamps that are paid out of the general budget, out of everyone’s taxes.
It is about time that these people earned enough not to need tax money — leaving more for the new administration to budget. More for education. More for road repair. More for libraries. More for all the things that we have to learn to do without thanks to Corbett’s incompetence.
As for the businesses that will have to pay the wages, well, they will no longer be subsidized, and will have to survive on their own.
If we have to sacrifice for the sake of the budget, so should they. They should pay their way and not expect any more handouts that we cannot afford to give them.
