Nuclear energy accounts for more than a third of the energy production in Pennsylvania.
With nine active reactors in our state, nuclear power stands as the second most abundant energy source only to coal. As nuclear remains the major energy source causing the fewest number of deaths in the entire United States, we continue to seek comfort in fossil fuels, because we believe in sources from the backyard. Here’s what we are not told by coal companies: Uranium exists in our backyards. It is one of the most abundant elements found within the Earth’s crust, and could last more than 60,000 years with current energy consumption rates. We, as Pennsylvania residents, cannot continue to be lulled to sleep by the uninformed opinion of others. Nuclear power plant production is growing all around the world; China, Japan, Russia, England and India are all creating new plants, why are we so behind? We are behind because of the current policies by the politicians who are so widely funded by coal and natural gas-burning business owners. We need to shift the public opinion on nuclear power both locally and nationally so that we can finally become a world power in energy production and also lead the world to a lower emission lifestyle.
