It didn’t take long for State College to find the net Tuesday night at Memorial Field.
Nor did the Little Lions stop at just one.
Robby Waite scored twice in the first six minutes and State College built a huge lead by halftime en route to a 6-1 win over Altoona in the District 6 Class AAA semifinals.
“We weren’t expecting it to be like this,” State College coach Danny Orton said. “We were pressing at first, then we relaxed and scored the goals and it changed the game.”
Never miss a local story.
The Little Lions (11-6-1) will look for their third straight district title Thursday night when they meet Hollidaysburg, a 2-0 winner over Central Mountain, in the finals at Altoona’s Mansion Park.
Getting those quick scores from Waite made everything easier the rest of the night for State College.
“We created chances all year, Robby had chances,” Orton said. “Tonight he was clinical. The first one he slotted under the keeper, the second one he chipped the ball over his head. We missed having a consistent threat in the final piece, and tonight he showed it.”
The scoring didn’t stop with Waite.
Will Edwards, Jake Garrigan and Kevin Reid also found the net in the first half for a comfortable 5-0 lead at the break, and Enrique Del Castillo rounded out the scoring with a goal in the final 10 minutes.
“We were comforable,” Orton said. “We spread out the entire field. Our possessions were good. It’s been that way for the most part this year, we could spread it out and keep it, but tonight we had the finishing on the end of a good buildup.”
Danny Cowan netted the goal for the Mountain Lions.
The Little Lions dominated offensively with a 22-7 shot advantage.
Ty Leway made four saves for the win, while his counterpart Joe Smith stopped nine shots.
