State College Post 245 split a pair of games Sunday to finish second in the Pennsylvania Open Wood Bat Tournament at the Shaner Complex.
State College got an outstanding pitching effort from Ben Finlan in a 1-0 triumph over Hampden of Mechanicsburg, which had previously lost just one of its 20 games. Finlan, who had thrown a no-hitter on Friday, tossed a two-hitter against Hampden.
The contest remained scoreless until the top of the sixth. Tyler Hall led off with a single and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. Brett Graham followed with a game-winning RBI single.
Finlan retired Hampden in order in the sixth, but gave up a one-out single in the seventh. He got the next two batters on a fly ball and groundout to complete the shutout.
State College’s offense couldn’t break through in the title game as Post 245 fell 4-0 against Albion Post 567 from Erie. Jonathan Polanco tossed a six-hitter for Albion.
Zach Ripka had two singled for State College, which after an 0-5 start has won 9 of 11 games.
