Ben Verbitskey’s two-run single capped a five-run fifth inning as Clarence broke open a tight game to defeat Pleasant Gap 8-2 in Centre County Baseball League action on Sunday.
The Mounties (9-5) led 3-2 before the outburst in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Derek Jabco singled, swiped second base and scored on Justin Taylor’s double to to the center field fence. Brian Kochik plated Taylor with a RBI single and later scored on an error. With two outs and the bases loaded, Verbitskey smacked his two-run single to push the lead to 8-2.
Justin Koleno, who had no-hit the Peppers earlier this season, tossed a five-hitter with two walks and one strikeout.
Kochik had an RBI single in the first and Jabco added a two-run double in the second. Jabco and Kochik each finished with three hits, while Matt Fisher and Verbitskey added two each.
Tyler Lalli’s two-run double in the fourth plated both runs for Pleasant Gap (7-9). Lalli had two hits.
