Evelyn and Ethan Van Horn combined to grab two gold medals at the 2014 Age Group National Championships for kayaking.
The siblings from Bellefonte earned their accomplishments on the Wausau Whitewater Course.
Evelyn earned her gold medal in the women’s kayak class for junior or U18 paddlers with a score of 125 seconds.
“I liked the camaraderie that the organizers developed,” Evelyn said. “It was great to see paddlers from both the East — Washington, DC, and Centre County — and the West — Colorado.”
Never miss a local story.
Ethan was clocked in 111 seconds in the U23 class and was the best in the kayak open class.
“This was the perfect venue for this type of event,” Ethan said. “It was perfect for both junior and even the cadet-age paddlers. The event was a challenge for the young paddlers, but not overwhelming.”
The Van Horns are members of Bellefonte’s Mach One Slalom Team, in its 50th year of operation.
At the annual Wacko Slalom in Wausau, Ethan won the men’s kayak class in 103 seconds, while Evelyn took the women’s kayak class in 115 seconds. Evelyn also captured first in the canoe singles class for women in 153 seconds — a time that would have left her second among the men.
