Nittany Track and Field is gearing up to kick off its fall youth cross country season, which will run from Aug. 27 through Nov. 23.
The club welcomes kids ages 8 to 18 years with any level of running experience, from those looking to join a team for the AAU Youth Cross Country Championship in Maryland on Nov. 2 to those just looking to get some fresh air and try running, and all abilities in between.
Practices will take place Tuesday through Thursday from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. and Sunday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the State College Area High School Track. The fee is $60 for the season ($40 for siblings). More than 1,000 runners completed the Firecracker 4K to kick off the Central PA 4th Fest. Daniel Craighead of State College was first in 12:57, and Hannah Grubb, also of State College, was the first woman in 14:40.
Fresh off of a fifth place finish at the TriRock Philadelphia Triathlon in June, professional triathlete Jason West had little trouble leading the field through the Happy Valley Spring Triathlon on July 6.
West completed the 750-meter pool swim, 20K bike, and 5K run in 55 minutes, 10 seconds. Taking first for the women was Jessica Koltz in 1:06:31.
John Clark (18:42) took first in the Race for Education 5K on July 12 in Philipsburg. Larie Hall was the first woman in 22:32.
Craighead got another win at the Sue Crowe Memorial Arts Fest races on July 13, finishing the 10 miler in 57:37. Samantha Snead of Moscow led the women in 1:04:14. In the 10K, Alex Monroe of Lewistown was first overall in 34:10, and Lauren Philbrook of State College was the first woman and second overall in 37:59. Matthew Groves of State College won the 5K by over a minute, finishing in
16:56. Megan Marshall of State College was sixth overall and first woman in 18:57. Her husband, Eric Marshall, was second overall in 17:58. Kara Foster of Boalsburg, fresh off a ninth-place finish at the USA 10K Championship race at the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4 (33:07), was eighth overall and second woman in 19:13.
Ryan Sayers of Clearfield won the Houtzdale Days 5K on July 25 in 21:28. Marissa Albert was the first woman in 22:37.
Philip Ness of Philadelphia won the Allegheny Front Trail Run 50K in Philipsburg on July 26, finishing in 4:52:20, just 13 seconds ahead of Patrick Krott of Fairview. Larie Hall of Morrisdale was third overall and the first woman in 5:09:40. Matt Lipsey of Kersey took first in the 20K in 1:34:53, and Johanna Ohm of State College won the women’s race in 1:42:53.
At the Flutopia 5K on July 26 in Tudek Park, Yu Zhang (18:30) of State College was first and Jaimie Wright (20:34), also of State College, was sixth overall and the first woman.
Herbie’s Home “Town Loop”, Aug. 16, Talleyrand Park, Bellefonte, in conjunction with the Bellefonte Arts and Crafts Fair. 4-mile run/walk and 10-mile run begin at 8:30 a.m., and 14-mile non-competitive bike ride begins at 10 a.m. Registration: $25 for the 4-mile run, $35 for the 10-mile run, $25 for the 14-mile bike ride alone, and $40 for the 4- or 10-mile run and the 14-mile bike ride.
