Christina Diaz, who’s coached the Bellefonte volleyball team since 2014, was named Penn State softball’s first-ever Director of Operations on Tuesday.
She will be responsible for overseeing the budget in addition to coordinating travel plans, community service and class schedules. She will also organize recruit visits and the team practice schedule.
“I am very excited to be adding Christina Diaz to our staff,” Penn State softball coach Amanda Lehotak said in a news release. “She brings a wealth of knowledge in many areas of college athletics.”
Prior to her hiring, she worked as a research & evaluation associate at the university. She graduated from Florida in 2009 after playing volleyball there.
Rodriguez nominated for Woman of the Year
INDIANAPOLIS Former Penn State women’s soccer player Raquel Rodriguez is one of 543 nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, the NCAA announced Tuesday.
Rodriguez led the soccer program to its first national title in 2015 and won the MAC Hermann Trophy, the women’s soccer equivalent of the Heisman. She is one of 38 Division I women’s soccer players nominated.
The NCAA Woman of the Year award is designed to honor graduating female student-athletes who have “distinguished themselves through their collegiate careers in academics, athletics, service and leadership.”

Goodwin, Smucker earn Medal of Honor
UNIVERSITY PARK Penn State seniors David Goodwin (hockey) and Abby Smucker (lacrosse) were named the Nittany Lions’ recipients of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, the university announced Tuesday.
The Big Ten Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1915 and annually goes to the top male and female student-athlete from each member institution, based on who “attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work”
Goodwin guided the Penn State men’s hockey team to a Big Ten championship and earned his degree as a double-major in economics and Spanish. Smucker was a two-time team captain for the Penn State women’s lacrosse team and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
