Four Penn State wrestlers, including Quentin Wright, captured freestyle titles during today’s University Nationals in Akron, Ohio.
Representing the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, Wright joined Andrew Alton, James English and Andrew Long as champions.
Sophomore Wright, a Bald Eagle Area graduate who won NCAA and Big Ten titles last month, went 5-0 at 84 kilograms (185 pounds). Wright defeated Cornell’s Mack Lewnes 6-0, 5-1 in the finals. Wright also defeated Ohio State’s Nick Heflin 3-1, 3-1 in the semifinals and Minnesota’s Kevin Steinhaus 0-4, 3-1, 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Andrew Alton, a Central Mountain graduate, won the 66 kilogram (145.5 pounds) division with a 1-0, 3-0 victory over NCAA All-American Kevin LeValley of Bucknell. Alton went 5-0, reaching the finals with a 1-0, 6-1 victory over Mike Rowe.
Sophomore James English, one of Penn State’s many talented reserves, went 6-0 and defeated Bloomsburg’s Bryce Busler 1-1, 9-4 to capture the title at 70 kilograms (154.25 pounds). English went 6-0 during the tournament.
Sophomore Andrew Long, a third-place NCAA finisher, defeated Minnesota’s Nick Dardanes 2-1, 5-1 at 63 kilograms (138.75 pounds). The victory capped a 5-0 weekend.
