The State College Spikes lost two key bullpen pieces today as the Pittsburgh Pirates promoted right-hander Vince Payne and left-hander Orlando Castro to full-season West Virginia.
Payne, a 2010 12th-round draft pick, was 2-1 with a 5.20 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings. Castro, the first player from Honduras in franchise history, was 2-0 with a 4.76 ERA in 17 innings.
The duo’s numbers are deceiving because. Payne, 20, allowed five runs in one inning against Brooklyn on July 25. Payne had seven scoreless outings with the Spikes. Castro, 19, allowed five innings in 2 2/3 innings against Mahoning Valley on July 22. He allowed one or no runs in four of his six appearances.
Both players received emergency work in West Virginia earlier this season.
Never miss a local story.
The Spikes end a six-game homestand against Connecticut at 6:05 p.m. tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
