UNIVERSITY PARK Maggie McCormick filled the nets with five goals to lead the Penn State women’s lacrosse team to a 20-14 victory over Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon at Holuba Hall.
In the opening match of American Lacrosse Conference play, the No. 7 Nittany Lions (5-3) also got three goals each from Molly Fernandez, Mackenzie Cyr and freshman Jenna Mosketti. Haley Ford and freshman Ally Heavens each put in two goals, Tatum Coffey had a goal and two assists and Kelly Lechner also netted a goal. McCormick, Cyr, Fernandez, Lechner and Mosketti all collected assists.
It was the first 20-goal game for Penn State since a win against Lafayette in 2009 as the Nittany Lions outshot the Comodores 30-28.
Freshman goalkeeper Emi Smith made six saves while Vanderbilt’s Chelsea Pasfield turned aside seven shots.

Carly Linthicum’s four goals and three assists, and three goals each from Kelly Chandler and Abby Wheeler led Vanderbilt (1-8, 0-2).
Penn State visits Drexel on Friday.
