The Penn State softball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh at Beard Field on Wednesday.
Marlaina Laubach pitched a complete game, allowing one unearned run and striking out six to earn the win for the Nittany Lions in their home opener. Kayla Harris went six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits to take the loss for the Panthers (22-6).
Penn State trailed 1-0 after Pittsburgh’s Shelby Pickett doubled to drive in Kathryn Duran in the top of the third inning. Duran reached base on an error by Penn State first baseman Kristina Brackpool.
The Nittany Lions took the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run by Macy Jones. Penn State’s Shelby Miller, who went 2 for 3, pushed the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the fifth.
Penn State’s Lexi Knief finished 2 for 3 and scored a run.
The Nittany Lions (13-12) start Big Ten play with a three-game series against Northwestern at home, with the opener set for Friday at 6 p.m.
