Northwewstern’s Olivia Duehr spoiled Penn State’s seventh-inning comeback by belting her fourth home run of the weekend as the Wildcats completed a three-game sweep with a 5-4 triumph in eight innings Sunday at Nittany Lion Softball Park.
Northwestern (14-10 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) belted four more home runs on Sunday and finished the weekend with 13 longballs against Penn State pitching.
The Nittany Lions (13-15, 0-3) trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Lexi Knief started the rally with a triple to center field and one out later scored on Shelby Miller’s infield single. Kristina Brackpool chased home Miller with an RBI double to left-center field. Penn State had runners at second and third when Kristen Wood struck out Shannon Good to end the threat.
With one out an inning later, Duehr homered to right field off Macy Jones. It was the only run the Wildcats got in six strong relief innings against Jones (3-1), who allowed five hits, walked one and struck out four.
Never miss a local story.
Wood, who won all three games over the weekend, allowed six hits, walked four and struck out seven. Andrea Filler, Brianna LeBeau and Sammy Netting also homered for Northwestern.
Alyssa Vanderveer hit a solo homer for Penn State, her fifth of the season. Knief had two hits and Miller drove in two runs.
Penn State next hosts Robert Morris in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
