The Penn State softball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover in a 7-4 loss to Indiana at Beard Field on Sunday.
It completed the Hoosiers’ three-game sweep of the Nittany Lions.
Indiana (14-28, 5-7) took control with a three-run second inning.
Penn State starting pitcher Marissa Diescher gave up three straight walks to load the bases with no outs. Indiana’s CaraMia Tsirigos and Taylor Uden followed with RBI singles before Marlaina Laubach replaced Diescher in the circle. With the bases loaded and one out, Rebecca Blitz’s sacrifice fly made it 3-0 Hoosiers.
Diescher gave up three runs on two hits and three walks in one inning to take the loss.
Penn State responded with two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Kristina Brackpool and an RBI single by Lexi Knief. But the Nittany Lions never got any closer. Indiana added one run in third and fourth innings to extend its lead to 5-2 and pushed its advantage to 7-2 with two runs in the seventh.
Laubach allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits in six innings of relief. Indiana starter Lora Olson went 51/3 innings, limiting Penn State to two runs on nine hits for the win.
Brackpool, who finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs, recorded a two-run single in the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Penn State (21-20, 4-8) hosts a doubleheader against Ohio State on Wednesday, with the first game set to start at 5:30 p.m.
