Kristina Brackpool led the Penn State softball team to a sweep of its doubleheader Wednesday, helping the Nittany Lions beat the Buckeyes 7-6 and 11-6 at Beard Field.
Brackpool finished 4 for 7 with two home runs — including a grand slam — and seven RBIs in the doubleheader.
In the first game, the Nittany Lions used a four-run third inning to take control and held off Ohio State’s comeback attempt in the seventh.
Macy Jones’ two-run double broke a 1-1 tie in the third. Penn State went ahead 5-1 after an RBI groundout by Alyssa VanDerveer and an RBI single by Erin Pond. Brackpool hit a two-run home run to make it 7-3 going to the seventh.
The Buckeyes scored three runs in the seventh before a double play ended the game. Penn State’s Marlaina Laubahc went six innings and allowed six runs in the win, and Jones picked up the save.
In the second game, Penn State overcame a 6-0 deficit to complete the sweep of the Buckeyes (22-18).
Brackpool’s grand slam in the fifth inning gave the Nittany Lions an 8-6 lead. Pond hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Penn State’s Jessica Cummings pitched a complete game, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits in the win.
Penn State (23-20) starts a three-game series at Maryland on Friday at 6 p.m.
