Penn State couldn’t overcome a five-run deficit in a 5-3 loss to Maryland on Sunday.
The Terrapins completed a three-game sweep of the Nittany Lions with the win.
Maryland seized control with a three-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Corey Schwartz. The Terrapins pushed their lead to 5-0 in the fourth.
Penn State scored three runs in the sixth, but the Nittany Lions’ rally ended with two runners on base on a flyout by Macy Jones. Jones pitched 32/3 innings and allowed five runs (two earned) to take the loss. Lexi Knief had a two-run double for Penn State.
Maryland’s Hannah Dewey earned the win, limiting the Nittany Lions to three runs (two earned) on nine hits in six innings.
Penn State (23-23, 6-11) hosts a doubleheader against Saint Francis (Pa.) Wednesday at 5 p.m.
